Longview Parks and Recreation
We decorated 5000 bags!
About our project: The city of Longview has been participating in this project for close to 15 years now. We love it. It's a great way to bring Earth Day awareness to the schools, get them involved in an art project and a great way to market the upcoming Earth Day Celebration we do in our community! Both Longview and Kelso school districts participate in the the earth day grocery bag project. Just about every classroom in all the elementary schools participate. That's a total of 17 schools. We get 5,000 bags from our local Fred Meyer and deliver them to every school. We make it very easy for the school and send them in stacks of 25 for each classroom. We attach an information letter for each teacher. They have about a week and a half to create their bags and then we go pick them up from every school again. Our project is also a contest. Every classroom picks out their favorite created bag. All those top winners are then judged for an overall grand champion. The winning bags classroom then receives a $250 gift card to purchase science related supplies. The gift cards are donated by Solvay Chemical- a hydrogen peroxide company in our community. The winning bags are displayed at the Earth Day Celebration and all the others go back to the Fred Meyer store. Each kid that participates gets an Earth Day sticker. We ask the kids to write the date and location of the earth day event on each bag so that gets more people to our event. I think the grand prizes (we give out 1 to each of our school districts) is a great incentive to get the schools and teachers involved in the project- that's why we have so much participation too!

We decorated 50 bags!
About our project: This is the 5th year participating in this event. This year Orchards Elementary first grade decorated 50 bags to be distributed at our local Safeway grocery store. Some messages from the kids included "There will be no future if we don't take care of the Earth" and "Help the nature, please" and Earth with speaking bubbles "Help me please I need help, Keep me cleam and plant trees, I like my water clean and I want to be clean so keep me clean". Thank you for continuing this wonderful project!

We decorated 56 bags!
About our project: This was our first year participating, and it won't be our last! I approached our local Town & Country & they graciously donated their grocery bags. We used this as part of our Earth Week activities and many of our kids at our three different programs (Pre-school, K-2nd grades, 3rd-6th grades) really enjoyed getting the message out about recycling & protecting the Earth!

Arbor Heights Elementary
We decorated 389 bags!
About our project: Wow! Arbor Heights started this with our local Safeway store 20 years ago. The next year, 1994, we put it out on the Internet, asking other schools to join it. THOUSANDS of schools have participated since then. We are still at it. Our whole school participated. We have some pictures of our efforts at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahlness/sets/72157629736823127/detail/ We were also featured in a post on the West Seattle Blog: http://westseattleblog.com/2012/04/arbor-heights-earth-day-groceries-project-bags-have-arrived Many thanks to our PTA for funding Safeway gift cards for the "best" classroom bags. And many thanks to Safeway!

Arbor Heights Elementary
We decorated 32 bags!
About our project: For the 19th year in a row, students at Arbor Heights decorated bags for our local Safeway. This year, however, we had to contend with Earth Day falling at the end of our (late) spring break and a too full schedule of special events at school... So only one classroom was able to decorate bags, but they were indeed beautiful! Safeway will hang them up, as usual - and they know that the whole school will be participating next year!
