We decorated 362 bags!

About our project: This is the second year that our district has participated in the Earth Day Bags project. The elementary "Trojan Walkers" Walking Club sponsored the project with the help of Ardella Wessling club sponsor, Rachel Webb and Mary Arnberger. Our local grocery store, Catlin's Friendly Apple Market, let us borrow 400 bags to decorate for the project. We asked Mrs. Kough, our elementary art teacher and Miss Wolff, our junior high art teacher, to help get the bags decorated. They both agreed to let their students decorate the bags during their art time and we had 282 students decorate 362 bags! The students included messages on the bags to re-use the bag for one full week. We also asked that our local Catholic Grade School participate in the project this year and St. John’s decorated 25 bags. We spread the word through the schools by putting up bulletin boards and making announcements about the use of plastic bags and bottles and the need for environmentally friendly alternatives. We recycled 120 plastic water bottles during our all school sack lunch the week before Earth Day Week. During Earth Day Week, we held a paper recycling challenge for all grade school classes. The school collected 2,936 lbs of paper to take to our local recycling center. The winning classes, one sixth grade and one second grade, went to the center with us and had an ice cream party afterwards. On Friday April 17 our local paper, The Beloit Call, printed a press release to let our community know the bags would be available at Catlin's on April 22. We delivered the bags to Catlin's on April 21 and The Call was there to take pictures. On Earth Day, Catlin's put away their plastic bags and used only our paper bags until they were all passed out. The bags were all passed out by 4pm that day! Catlin’s also donated 50 reusable cloth bags for us to give away on Earth Day! We had a drawing of all the students who participated in the Earth Day Bags project. We printed participation certificates for all the classes who made bags and for the schools that participated. We also presented a framed certificate to Catlin's! Overall this project was a resounding success and our students had a great time participating. We were able to add activities this year and celebrated the whole Earth Day Week! Our local grocery store has agreed to make cloth shopping bags available for people who want an alternative to plastic! We will definitely do this again!

We decorated 230 bags!

About our project: Students really got involved in decorating bags (especially in Spanish!) We spent time discussing phrases that would get the point across about going green and recycling. Hopefully the patrons at our local Dillons enjoyed our bags as much as our students did decorating them. Happy Earth day!

We decorated 563 bags!

About our project: Our school took on this project as a school wide community project. Bag were donated and will be handed out at the grocery store close to our school where our families often shop. We had an amazing 563 bags decorated by our Kindergarten through 5th grade students! This was a great way to encourage students to discuss the problems facing our planet and brainstorm what we can all individually do to make things better for future generations.
