We decorated 100
bags!
About our project: Decorating grocery bags was a great way to make both our students and the local community aware of our responsibility to care for the earth. As a Christian school, we emphasized that God wants us to be good stewards of His creation, and that eco-spirituality involves justice since we need to "live more simply so that others may simply live." The Triangle Grocery store was very glad to work with us. They hung some of our 100 bags for display. An unexpected blessing came because of our press release. It peaked the interest of a local newspaper and the result was an article featuring Prince of Peace with a photo of some students. The timing was wonderful since the article came out right before our yearly Silent Auction fundraiser and gave us good press!

We decorated 550
bags!
About our project: Hermosa Heights teachers and students had so much fun participating in the Earth Day Groceries Project in 2006! Our local Albertsons donated over 500 bags. All we had to do was ask! I handed out the information sheet from the website, and that was a big help. We also had another volunteer site, but chose to stick with one partner store. My fifth grade class coordinated the effort at our school. They were armed with information sheets and maps of the school. They worked in teams and wrote down participating classes and the number of bags each class would need. Then they delivered and picked up bags. This helped them really take ownership of the project. By filling out a tip sheet for the local media, our efforts were featured on our school district's website and in our local paper! This was exciting for my students. Next year, we'd like to take more pictures - maybe of each individual class with their bags, or a big "whole school" portrait. I would also like to invite classes to do a schoolwide clean-up, picking up trash and litter on our school grounds. The Earth Day Groceries project brought our school together for a common goal! Teachers, students, and administration worked together to make this year's project a success. We'll definitely be enthusiastic participants in 2007!
