We decorated 550
bags!
About our project: Providence K-8 School is a new school this year and I am a first year computer keyboarding teacher. We were looking for ways to get positive publicity for our school in the community. Providence is classified as an environmental school by the Huntsvillie City Schools. The Earth Day Bags project fit our needs perfectly. I coordinated the effort through our two art teachers Ms. Gacena Upton, elementary, and Ms. Hunt Hudson, middle school. Their art students had fun decorating the bags while learning basic principles of art imagineering. I solicited Publix and Starr Markets to partner with our school supplying the bags and distributing them on Earth Day. This was a very positive experience and both managers offered to partner with our school for future needs. Mr. Keith Ward with Huntsville City Schools ETV network promoted our efforts to the media. Three television stations came to Providence to cover the event and we had several major network broadcasts promoting Earth Day and the efforts of the Providence students. Ms. Carol Nixon our SPACE teacher for middle school had her video production class incorporate one of the newscasts into their daily WPNT (Providence News Team) in school broadcasts. Wow! Talk about a positive experience, everyone wins! Students learned about art and Earth Day while having FUN! Parents and the community learned about Earth Day, Providence K-8 School, and our partners Publix and Starr Markets. Many thanks to the Earth Day organization, Ms. Upton, Ms. Hudson, Ms. Nixon, Mr. Ward, Mr. Bruce Ward (manager Publix), Mr. T.J. Morris (manager Starr Markets) and especially our talented students here at Providence K-8 School!!!
