We decorated 215 bags!

About our project: This year American School for the Deaf Participated in the Earth Day Groceries project. Wild Oats Natural Marketplace (340 N. Main St., West Hartford, Connecticut, 06117) was generous enough to donate 500 bags for our project. Students and staff rose to the challenge and decorated over 215 bags! Teachers found creative ways to incorporate this project into their curriculum. Students in art classes decorated the bags with brilliant colors and great imagination. Others created original poems to personify the idea of environmental awareness. Some students colored and cut out magnificent pictures and pasted them on the bags. Across the content areas, teacher found great ways to participate. The completed bags where brought to Wild Oats and were displayed around the store during a pre-Earth Day celebration. On April 22, the bags were given to shoppers in which to carry their items and hopefully reuse for future shopping. One thing is for sure; the customers of Wild Oats who received our bags were certainly in awe over the talent, passion and creativity of our A.S.D students! A Power Point presentation was made displaying our project. Wild Oats also gave us free posters for teachers and students to enjoy. Congratulations to ASD and the Earth Day Bag Project on a job well done! Bill Halscheid

About our project: The third grade students at Center School in Old Lyme, CT enjoyed decorating the brown paper bags for this worthwhile Earth Day project. One student actually received his own bag! Mrs. Eileen Zehnder, a member of the Westbrook Garden Club, visited Mrs. Nancy Sparaco's third grade class and spoke about the importance of protecting our Earth for future generations to come. What fun we had becoming artists!

About our project: The fourth and fifth graders were paired with each other. We all met in the Cafe and discussed the importance of Earth Day. We read a wonderful story about Earth Day - the main theme of the story was about how just one person can make a difference. I will be trying to send you some pictures.
