We decorated 300
bags!
About our project: The 77th Regional Readiness Command (RRC), US Army Reserve and the school St Mary Star of the Sea, Far Rockaway, NY partnered in the Grocery Bag Project for Earth Day 2003. The students assembled in the school auditorium and were presented with a brief talk on the environment. At which time the grocery bag project was also explained to them. They returned to their classrooms and decorated the bags. Two sheets of banner paper were distributed for the children to decorate. One remained at the school and the other banner was displayed in the lobby of the HQ, 77th RRC. The teachers distributed Earth day coloring books, pencils, frisbees, bookmarks, etc. to their classes. These items were supplied by the Army Reserve. A representative from the 77th RRC's Public Affairs office covered the event and published a story in the 77th RRC's magazine. The children really enjoyed the project and learned about the environment.

We decorated 385
bags!
About our project: The Earth Day Bags Project was very successful at Seward Elementary School. Students from K-5 participated. Many teachers read Earth Day oriented books such as The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss, and A River Ran Wild, by Lynne Cherry, as an introduction to the activity. Students loved coloring the bags and passing their messages along to their community. One student even got her bag when her family went shopping that night. I will continue to coordinate this project in the future.

We decorated 200
bags!
About our project: This project was wonderful for the students. The class had a great time doing the bags, and Tops Friendly Markets was more than willing to help us. After receiving both posters and fliers and putting them up in the school, volunteers came in to help with the project. Also there was help from adults and a church group too!! This was such a success and I hope to do this lesson every year!
