Books In A Bag-Reading Club
Burlington, MEUSA
We decorated 21
bags!
About our project: From the deep woods of beautiful Maine, five members of the "Books In A Bag" Reading Club, (grades 4-8) completed 21 bags for distribution! Decorating was a creative and cooperative effort for our small group. It's very exciting to be part of this "global" project. Thanks to the Burlington General Store, our ONE local store and Shop' n Save supermarket in the nearby town of Lincoln. The support from both stores helped us impact a larger number of consumers. The club will use "Earth Day Grocery Project" to launch a community service campaign called Burlington Recycles. Club members will make displays, posters, charts, and maps to promote recycling and encourage citizens to use the recycling facilities available at the Burlington /Lowell Transfer Station.

Princeton Elementary School
Princeton , MEUSA
We decorated 179
bags!
About our project: This is the fifth year that the Princeton Elementary School has helped our community celebrate Earth Day by participating in the Earth Day Groceries Project. The entire school participates. We have an Earth Day Grocery Bag Contest and Prizes are Awarded for the best bags. We were able to award prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each grade K-8. This year we were also able to award two $50.00 savings bonds to the grand prize winners grades K-4 and grades 5-8. These prizes were made possible by donations from our local bank and also donations from local businesses as well as teacher donations. The winning bags are displayed throughout the school during the week of our Spring Fling. They are then brought to our local grocery school for distribution on Earth Day.

About our project: The Lewiston Recycling Committee provided bags from the local grocery store to the High School's Environmental Club, Day Care Center and other interested classes. Students colored, painted and created many creative designs utilizing magazine clippings of environmental images. Some students chose to add "catchy" poetry to the bags to spread the message about environmental awareness.

Pettingill Elementary-City of Lewiston
Lewiston, MEUSA
We decorated 210
bags!
About our project: As part of the City's mission to educate the community on recycling and waste reduction, the Solid Waste Division e-mailed the School Dept. to invite them to participate in the project. Pettingill was one of four schools that took part with over 2/3rds of their enrollment decorating a bag! Next year the request for participation will go out earlier in the year so that all teachers may incorporate this into their lesson plans.
