We decorated 630 bags!

About our project: The project was chaired by David Carter, a 6th Grade teacher who teaches Science to all of the 6th Grade classes and Millicent Mish, Magnet Teacher Assistant at Kernan School. All 39 classes, Kindergarten through 6th Grade participated and 630 students decorated 630 grocery bags. This was a school-wide service learning project for our Mentoring Learn and Serve America Program here at Kernan School. The bags were decorated with Earth Day themes after the classroom teachers did a lesson on the importance of keeping our environment clean. The students enjoyed decorating the bags. Many of the bags were "Works of Art"!!! The bags were donated by the Manager of Price Chopper in South Utica, Gary Guidera. Mr. Carter brought the decorated bags to the store where they were then used to bag groceries on Earth Day - Saturday, April 22, 2000.

We decorated 700 bags!

About our project: This was our second year participating and once again it was a success! Students in grades K-6 decorated approximately 700 bags. The production of these Earth Day bags was coordinated by our art teacher, Margaret Fennell. The decorated bags were returned to SuperValu, our local grocery store, and distributed to customers in celebration of Earth Day. Our students really enjoyed this activity and are already looking forward to doing it again next year. Thanks for the great idea!

We decorated 70 bags!

About our project: We wanted to create an awareness of how important it is for every individual to help do his/her part in saving our planet. We asked each student to design some kind of slogan or message to demonstrate ways everyone can make even one small change that would benefit the Earth. After a group brainstorming session, the students illustrated their messages on paper bags that were then distributed to two local stores. Since we are a very small community, we felt it was a very personal kind of effort and a good way to reach our neighbors and families. The kids were enthusiastic and seemed generally concerned about trying to make changes that might help save our planet.
