We decorated 350 bags!

About our project: Students used their Habits of Mind (creating, imagining,& innovating; applying past knowledge; checking for accuracy; and persisting) to help them send a very important message to the public. This is our third year participating and the students enjoy this activity each year.

We decorated 450 bags!

About our project: This year we used the Earth Day Project as a frienship link with our partner school, South Frederick Elementary School from Frederick, MD. Salem Ave. and South Frederick's 3rd grade students have been penpals since November. On April 18th, South Frederick visited us so we could meet in person. We wrote a performance task, that our students performed together, decorating the grocery bags for Earth Day. It was such an exciting day for both schools and the Earth Day Grocery Bags Project was the icing on the cake! Of course nearly all of our students, K through 4 also participated for the 4th consecutive year.

We decorated 56 bags!

About our project: This was a culminating activity to a interdisciplinary unit the fourth grade had completed on environmental appreciation. The students enjoyed expressing themselves artistically while they completed the activity and learning about earth day. We listened to music with environmental messages to enhance the experience. Students who were absent the day of the activity notived their class's bags around town! Thank you very much for the idea and for the supplies. The students feel that they have truly made a difference.

We decorated 12 bags!

About our project: I recieved the information about this project on Wednesday (April 18). I was very excited about implementing it, but there was not enought time to do the whole thing. I told my students about the project Thursday afternoon and many of them volunteered to bring bags from home. Thursday I went to Safeway and asked them for a hand full of bags for this project. Since i only needed 10 or so I just asked the cashier). She laughed when I told her what it was for. I live in a different neigborhood than my students do so instead of bringing the bags back to my Safeway, I asked them to bring their bags home and have their parents use them when they go gorcery shopping this coming week. My kids were very excited to be involved in and online project. Some were VERY motivated to be creative and think for themselves. This priject gave them something to really talk about and discuss. I will have them write about what happened to their bags when they come back to school on Monday.
