We decorated 273 bags!

About our project: First I would like to say, this is a great project. I work for the Native Village of Eyak in Cordova Alaska, and this is the fourth year the village has participated in this event. In 98 and 99 we used paper bags for the project ,but in 2000 and 2001 we were awarded a grant from the EPA's Indian General Assistance Program that allowed us to purchase 500 cloth tote bags from Eco-Bags Products Inc. These bags are great, very sturdy and will last a long time. I passed out 273 bags and about 175 of them were returned to me to be entered in a decorating contest. There are winners from every class in the catagories of "Best use of color", "Most Artistic", "Best Earth Day Message", "Alaska Pride", "Cordova Pride", and "Most Creative". The kids really tried hard and it was a very tough decision for us, the judges. The six overall winners from the school have their bags displayed at the local post office with a poster discribing the contest. They will remain up for about a month. This has greatly increased public awarness and has built up interest in the project. We hope to do the same next year and have a bigger and better display.
