We decorated 330
bags!
About our project: In preparation for Earth Day this year, we read books and watched videos regarding pollution and conservation. Too, our students were treated to 2 great assemblies on Rainforest Animals and Recyling that helped prepare them for this day. After reading the Earth Day Groceries website, I rallied 14 additional teachers whose K-6th classes participated in the project--collectively we decorated 330 paper bags, loaned from our local Safeway, promoting awareness in the community. The kids learned a lot, and we even did an art project using recycled cans to extend the lesson into daily life!

We decorated 300
bags!
About our project: Students in Mr. Turner's 5th grade class created environmental awareness posters during their computer lab times. A local grocery store was contacted and the students decorated grocery bags with their messages. Other classrooms joined in. On Earth Day 2006, 300 grocery bags were passed out to shoppers at Scott's Food Stores, Coventry Ln., Fort Wayne, IN. The wonderfully illustrated messages and artwork gave a positive reminder to our community. Washington Center Elementary cares about the environment and wants us all to do our part. The students were interested in learning more about environmental solutions and are using the internet for research. Happy Earth Day from Fort Wayne, Indiana!

We decorated 2655
bags!
About our project: To start we ask Industrias Morisan to donate us paper bags. In our town there is no one that produces this kind of paper bags so we have to go to Mexico City and asked for them. Fortunatelly Industrias Morisan gave us 3000 bags who we tried to decorate. So it was a har job being 283 students and 65 teachers and staff. So we had to asked for help. We send bags to students home and parents and grand parents helped decorating them. Also we spend to mornings with mothers in school decorating bags. The previous Saturday we put a stand outside the store and invite people who were coming to buy to paint a bag and use it later. This was a great success. Children stayed outside the store with us instead of going shopping. So we decorate 2655 with many people involved and the message was spread by word, by fliers, through an interview in the radio with our students and also in TV. Again this year we went with students from 1st to 9th grade to packed groceries while they explain the proyect to the buyers and the importance of taking care of our planet EARTH!

We decorated 525
bags!
About our project: Garden City Elementary students drew their messages on 525 Chapel Hill O’Malia’s paper grocery sacks. Students “borrowed” paper bags and decorated them with pictures and messages about Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. The sacks were then returned to O’Malia’s where they were used to bag their customers’ groceries on Earth Day, April 22nd. Messages in both English and Spanish gave ideas on how to care for the environment as, “Have a heart, Do your part-Pick up litter,” “Keep our water clean by picking up litter,” “Recycle plastic, cans, and paper,” and “If you cut down a tree, plant a new one.” Gator students had a ball spreading environmental awareness for their future and giving back to their community.

We decorated 600
bags!
About our project: I discovered this project last year while searching for ideas for our annual Earth Day Art Contest. Participation had dropped off and I was looking for a fresh idea. We were overwhelmed by the response! Approximately 600 bags were decorated and handed out by two of our local grocery stores. Special displays were created with selected bags. One bag was selected to have the art transferred to t-shirts given out to participants at our annual Earth Day Bicycle Tour on the refuge. The selected bag was then framed and presented to the student at one of the participating grocery stores by myself, the store manager and Charlie Charlton, mascot for Keep Charlton County Beautiful. The event was covered by our local media.
