Students of SPARC Academy had a great time with the Earth Day Groceries
Project as a part of a Service Learning Activity. Elementary and middle
school students participated in the project. A local Kroger Store
supplied us with the bags to decorate. The students really got into
their work, and were very creative. We took two group field trips to
return the bags to the store. The students entertained the managers,
employees and customers with rhythmic hand claps and songs. To conclude
the field trips, the groups enjoyed lunch at a nearby Golden Corral
Restaurant. The students thoroughly enjoyed the project and we look
forward to doing it again next year.
General Greene Elementary located in Greensboro, NC
participated in your Bag Beautification project by decorating 229
recycleable grocery bags provided by our local Winn-Dixie store. The
students really got into this project and the store manager was most
receptive. He also stated that the customers enjoyed getting the
decorated bags. I apologize that it has taken some time to send this.
Due to "technical difficulties" wherein my e-mail access was "out there"
somewhere in cyberspace, this is the earliest I have been able to send
your mail! Please add our information to your database, so that we may
know were are included in these statistics. General Greene is a magnet
school and its complete name is: General Greene School of Science and
Technology. Thanks for pulling all of this together. It is fascinating
for the children to see and read the efforts of children in Greece, etc.

Comments: Four classrooms including second, third and fourth graders
decorated grocery bags which were returned to Wellspring Grocery in
Raleigh. Children also read the archives on the earthdaybags.org site,
referred to your Earth Day slogans for decorating the bags and read
about the many different suggested uses for paper bags. Root's science
teacher organized a Forest Festival for April 23 and decorating the bags
was a wonderful addition to the science events.

Comments: I found your grocery bag idea while surfing the net and brought the idea to our art teacher and principal. They both loved the idea and so I checked with our local FoodLion store and they agreed to sponcer us. The students in grades K-4 worked on decorating the bags during their art class. Let me tell you, the bags looked great and got the message about recycling, reuse and use paper bags out to the community. Each grade level did a different design. Kindergarten did a world that was smiling. Sand Ridge Elementary is very proud to have been part of this worthy cause.

Comments: This was the first year that Durham schools have participated in the program. I was pleased to have three local elementary schools, George Watts, C.C. Spaulding and Eno Valley participate.
Bags were distributed to three different Kroger stores in the Durham area. The students enjoyed decorating the bags and I hope that these schools and others will participate in future years.

When I first suggested designing Earth Day Bags I got very little excitement from our teachers and students. But decorating was
contagious!! We had so much fun and the kids were very creative. We'd like to thank Winn-Dixie on Sunset and Statesville Road
for donating bags. These were the best bags because they had no advertising on them!! We also would like to thank Food
Lion at Cheshire Place for donating bags. We stapled our pictures onto their bags. About 85% of our students participated
and we hope to donate 1 bag per student next year or 575 bags.

All 1,015 students in our K-5 elementary school participated. The students really enjoyed this hands-on activity! Our local newspaper covered this event and wrote a great artical about this project. Our natural foods cooperative grocery worked with the Claxton Elementary School art classes to have 250 grocery bags decorated. Grades 1 to 6 all participated. Our store displayed some of the bags throughout the store and sent shoppers on their way with the beautiful bags. Some shoppers did not want the groceries into the bags because they said they were too nice. What a great experience.

Happy Earth Day! Our 500+ PreSchool through 4th grade students decorated over 500 grocery bags which are being distributed by the Main Commissary today on the base. We have just had an Earth Day parade with students' work plus the majority of staff members are wearing Celebrate Earth Day with our school imprinted on the tee-shirt. Comments: Our class decided to embark on this project after reading about it in our Weekly Reader. We thought that it would be a very worhtwhile project as it would serve a twofold purpose both providing information around the community about the need to care and do something about keeping our earth clean as well as making a good grade for their effort on this project. Comments: This was a wonderful and easy project. Thank you for all the information, letters to grocers, media, etc., and helpful slogans. This was a wonderful avenue to motivate the student's thinking about Earth Day and conservation. They came up with wonderful slogans and got very enthusiastic about this theme. Now our community will also see how are children care and are worried about the earth and hopefully, they will do their part in this conservation effort. I am very glad we participated in this project and hope to participate again next year.

North Carolina Earth Day Groceries Reports - 1998
We participated in this project last year and plan on doing the project again
this year. It was a tremendous success and the kids had a wonderful time
decorating the 500 bags we had obtained from a local store in Beaufort. The
messages they came up with were awesome and we got some really positive
feedback from the customers, the grocery store, media, and other members of the
community.

Thanks to our local Food Lion we decorated 292 bags for Earth Day.
Our students had a great time and were very creative. One class used a
computer program to create pictures to glue on their bags. We enjoyed
participating and hope to be part of this project next year.

North Carolina Earth Day Groceries Reports - 1997
Grades K through 2 decorated 400 brown paper bags donated by the local
Food Lion store with Earth Day messages. Several second graders wrote
letters to a local TV celebrity and dared him to come to the store and bag
groceries for Earth Day. He agreed. A local newspaper also covered the
event.

Greetings from Woodfin Elementary School in Asheville, NC. We participated
in the Earth Day Groceries Project for the third year in a row, and once
again, it was a huge success. Every student in our school decorated at
least one grocery bag for a total of around 300. Our local television
station filmed us decorating our bags one day at school, and we made the
6:00 news. On the Saturday before Earth Day, fifth-graders actually worked
at the grocery store explaining the project to customers, bagging
groceries, and spreading the Earth Day messages. Our local newspaper
covered the story on Saturday. We had pizza afterwards to celebrate the
success of the project. Thank-you for sharing it with us!

Happy Earth Day from Brentwood Elementary in Fayetteville, NC. This was our
first time to participate in the Earth Day Grocery Bag Project. Brentwoood PTA
and Ms. Simpson, the art teacher distributed the bags. The children decorated
369 beautiful bags for Food Lion on Raeford Rd. We delivered the bags to Food
Lion and had children read their Earth Day reports with the media taping.

North Carolina Earth Day Groceries Reports - 1996
This is Cheryl Hunt from Green Valley School located in Boone, North
Carolina. Our Student Council has just completed sponsoring along with
our local Lowes Food store an Earth Day project. We decorated over 420
paper grocery bags that were then displayed and later used for groceries
to promote Earth Day and the importance of reusing and recycling. Our
students really enjoyed completing this project and then seeing their
bags displayed at Lowes Food. Thank you for coorindating this project.

My 25 second graders decorated 32 grocery bags with Earth Day logos. They
thought up catchy slogans and drew pictures depicting nature scenes. One
of my students father owns a convenience store and he provided, and
distributed, the completed bags for us. Our school is in a rural area of
the mountains of NC and since it is such a small community I feel that
the children's bags will make an impression on their friends and
neighbors in the community.
We also got the third grade class to participate in the project and
they decorated 27 bags.
It was a great idea and hopefully will have a positive impact on our
community.

15 classes at Lead Mine Elementary in Raleigh, NC decorated 375 bags for
Earth Day. Teachers participated in the project on a voluntary basis.
Maybe next year we can get the whole school involved.
We would like to thank our local Kroger for lending us the
bags to decorate. Teachers, students, and the gorcery store really
enjoyed participating in this project. Our students did some super bags.

At New Hope School we participated in the Grocery Bag
Project. The fifth grades were studying the Environment
and sponsored a school wide activity along with the media
center. All students enjoyed decorating the bags. We
can hardly wait until Earth Day to go to the grocery store
in our community and see our bags filling for the customers.
