The fourth grade students at Upper Allen Elementary School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania participated in the Earth Day Grocery Bag Project for the first time this year. The students decorated over 200 paper grocery bags with colorful environmental messages in celebration of Earth Day 1999. Giant Foods on Cumberland Parkway in Mechanicsburg donated the bags for the students to decorate, and Giant will distribute the bags (packed with groceries) to its customers on Earth Day, April 22, 1999. The students enjoyed this Project, and it helped them to gain an increased awareness about Earth Day and environmental conservation.
